This chapter imparts understanding of the origins of the Hynñiew Trep – the Seven Families, who were sent down by God to care for all living creatures and forces. They are considered the ancestors of all Khasis today. The tales track the tribulations of these original peoples as they became overcome by greed and evil, which, consequentially, displeased God and the sun. As punishment, the peoples were made to suffer in darkness, and plead for light. These folktales explain and give background to some of the rituals that the Khasis peoples have today.
